Palm Tanager (Thraupis palmarum)

 

Synonyms: Tangara palmarum

 

 

 

Thraupis palmarum occurs in the tropical Americas from Nicaragua to southern Brazil, and in Trinidad and Tobago; 4 subspecies. Palm Tanagers frequent borders of moist and dry tropical forests, including second growth, gallery forests, savannas, orchards, gardens, and urban parks; often associates with palms; up to 1,600-2,000 m. Grayish-olive with yellow-olive crown, contrasting black wings, and blackish tail. Length 17-19 cm, weight 27-48 g. The nest is a bulky cup nest hidden in dense foliage, epiphytes, or palm leaf sheaths; also under the eaves or in other manmade structures. The clutch consists of 2-3 eggs; incubation ca. 14 days; the young fledge after 17 to 21 days. This species feeds on insects and other arthropods, e.g., termite alates and winged ants, and also small fruit, leaves, nectars, and food scraps. This species does not join mixed flocks.
